National bowls finals roll into town

THE Active Retirement Ireland National Bowls Competition Finals will roll into the INEC in Killarney today. With nearly 70 teams taking part from all around the country – from the Loughrea Lakers to the Beaufort Hobbits – hundreds of competitive spirits ranging from the age of 50 to 95 converged on the southwest for the occasion.
Now in its eighth year, the competition offers older people a chance to remain involved in competitive sport; something that’s absolutely vital in older age, as it reduces the risk of dementia and heart disease. Peter Kavanagh, Head of Communications and Public Affairs for Active Retirement Ireland, said described the bowlers as “an inspiration”. .
He adds that bowls is a sport that people of all ages can participate in. "It really suits our members who want some enjoyable light exercise. Our national tournament is now in its eighth year, and over that time it’s encouraged more and more people to remain active and sociable during their retirement years.
“These bowlers are an inspiration to people not just of retirement age, but of all ages. They’re contributing to their own health and wellbeing, staying active and healthy through physical and mental activities – this is not only a great social event; it's also a fantastic sporting occasion for people of all ages."
