Muckross to host John B Keane’s The Successful TD

T
THE hilarious antics in John B Keane’s book The Letters of a Successful TD form the basis of a must-see play being staged in Killarney next week. Head to Muckross Schoolhouse on Friday, October 14, or Saturday, October 15, where the world premier of The Successful TD will unfold.
The plot follows the trials and tribulations of Tull McAdoo as he seeks re-election to the Dáil in the "October Elections”.
Written by John B Keane in 1967, the lines see the playwright display his edge for humour and satire that are uncomfortably close to the politics of today. Peppered with Keane's gallery of madcap characters this show will have you laughing at politics (in a good way) from the start.
Tull has roped in the help of his faithful daughter Kate while his wife nurses her various ailments in bed or Lisdoonvarna, but his archenemy Flannery the local schoolteacher plans to scupper the election for Tull.
To quote John B Keane’s immortal words: “Any man with a vote is a man to be respected. I’ll play with them, lie to them, sing dumb about them while I have a chance of a vote. That’s my livelihood. Don’t give me no more stink about the truth. Christ told the truth and they crucified Him…”
Based on The Letters of A Successful TD and An Irish Minister of State by John B Keane, the work has been adapted for the stage by the production’s stars Jon Kenny and Mary McEvoy and director Michael Scott. The shows commence at 8pm. Tickets, €20, are available by calling 064-6670165 and 064-6630804.
