WRAP up warmly if you are venturing outside tonight, or be sure to nab the best seat by the fireside if you are staying indoors, as Met Éireann has warned of icy weather, wind and snow in places.

The national weather service has issued a "status yellow" weather warning and says there may be snow on high ground by tomorrow. The forecast for this evening and early night-time is mild, with a little rain or drizzle. However, it is expected to become windy and colder later tonight, with clear spells and showers developing. Some of the showers could turn wintry on northern hills late in the night.

Lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees Celsius are forecast. Strong and gusty westerly winds will develop tonight and will be up to gale force in some northern and northwestern areas.

Met Éireann said tomorrow will be cold, windy and blustery with bright or sunny spells and showers. The heaviest and most frequent of these will be over Ulster, with a few wintry on high ground and also in Atlantic coastal counties.

Scattered showers on Atlantic coasts will sweep further inland tomorrow night, according to Met Éireann, which added they would turn “increasingly wintry” with snow on higher ground. Temperatures will reach a low of -1 to +2 degrees, said Met Éireann.
