Mayor in the running for Seanad seat
T
The Killarney political scene could be set for a major overhaul following the news that two councillors, including the Mayor, are in the running for vacant seats in Seanad Éireann.
Niall Kelleher has been nominated by Fianna Fáil to be one of their candidates while Bobby O’Connell’s name has been put forward by an outside body. The pair are vying to replace recently departed senators Denis Landy (Labour) and Trevor ó Clochartaigh who were both elected by the Agricultural Panel. Landy has resigned due to ill-health while ó Clochartaigh has taken on a new role as TG4’s communication manager.
The councillors will have the step down from their positions in the Municipal District Council if their bids are successful, which means Killarney could be looking for a new mayor in the not too distant future.
The polls for the by-election will close on April 27.
