Killarney teen to feature on RTÉ’s ‘Football Families’ tonight
Killarney-based Kerry FC player Oran Horgan will feature in tonight’s (Thursday’s) episode of Football Families, a new RTÉ documentary series focused on the world of underage soccer in Ireland.
The programme airs on RTÉ One on Thursday night and will be available to stream on the RTÉ Player.
The series follows young players across the country as they try to break into professional football, including Horgan, who became the youngest ever player to line out for Kerry FC’s senior team. He made his debut last November in Wexford at just 16 years, 11 months and 4 days.
In the documentary, the centre-back described himself as a confident player: “I’m a very confident player. I always back myself. I want to be as successful as I can.”
The episode also followed Kerry FC’s run to a cup final. Oran said: “We wouldn’t have gotten there just based off talent, it was by doing what other teams wouldn’t. We didn’t really care how it looked, we’d throw our bodies at the ball.”
His parents Alan and Elaine also appear in the programme. His mother said: “He’s always worked very hard. He’s a worker. He’s always been very strong-willed.”
Football Families was filmed during Shelbourne FC’s 2024 season under Damien Duff and offers behind-the-scenes access to youth academies and underage football setups across Ireland.
The series continues next week. All episodes are available to stream on the RTÉ Player.

Celebrations are underway in Killarney after Centra at The Reeks Gateway on Tralee Road sold a EuroMillions ticket worth €1,005,000 in the Friday, August 21 draw.
The lucky winner secured the life-changing sum through the special Ireland Only Raffle event after purchasing a Quick Pick ticket on the day of the draw.
Store owner John Bowler, who has operated the shop for over 20 years, expressed his delight after receiving the news from the National Lottery.
“There’s a great buzz around the store and we’re absolutely delighted,” Bowler said. “We have a mix of local customers and visitors coming through our doors every day, so the winner could be anyone. While we’ve sold fantastic prizes over the years, this is by far the biggest. It’s wonderful news for Killarney.”
National Lottery spokesperson Emma Monaghan urged anyone who bought a ticket at the store on Friday to check their numbers carefully. The ticket holder is advised to sign the back of the ticket, keep it safe, and contact the National Lottery prize claims team to arrange collection.
