Killarney shortlisted for Ireland’s greenest town
Killarney is on the longlist for the title of Ireland's Greenest Town 2025, placing it among five towns nationwide in contention for the award.
The competition is run by The Irish Times in partnership with Electric Ireland.
The town's nomination highlights its commitment to sustainability.
Bridget O’Keeffe, who nominated the town, pointed to Killarney's status as the first town in Ireland to eliminate single-use takeaway coffee cups, a move that has prevented over 1.5 million cups from going to landfill. Other efforts mentioned include the work of the local Tidy Towns Committee and the Killarney Sustainable Vision 2030, which promotes eco-friendly tourism and biodiversity protection.
Killarney is competing against Ballina and Kiltimagh in Co Mayo, Abbeyleix in Co Laois, and Skerries in Co Dublin.
Two other Kerry locations also made the longlist. Castlegregory / Maharees is a contender for Ireland's Greenest Village, and the Dingle Peninsula is on the list for Ireland's Greenest Community.
