Killarney rent freeze welcomed

Killarney is one of the latest towns in Ireland – and the first in Kerry – to be designated a Rent Pressure Zone (RPZ).
RPZs are located in areas of the country where rents are highest and where households have the greatest difficulty finding affordable accommodation.
A new report by the Residential Tenancies Board reveals that Killarney is now one of the most expensive towns to rent property in the country. The average cost of rent in Killarney is €923. The report states that the national average outside the Greater Dublin Area stands €872 pre month while the Kerry average stands at €790.
Elected members of the Kerry County Council were informed of the initial details of the report at an online meeting on Wednesday, and further details are expected to be released in the coming days.
“This was warmly welcomed by the elected members of the Killarney Municipal District as it will provide security for renters,” Mayor Michael Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser.
“Rent cannot be increased by more than four percent in any given year and this will give certainty to people who are renters.”
RZPs court controversy, while designed to keep rents at an affordable level, the cap means landlords, potentially, have a ‘target’ to set rental prices in line with the cap.
