A film made entirely in Killarney has not only won ‘Best Film’ at this year's Wexford Film Festival - but will feature as an Aer Lingus inflight movie – and has secured a US company for worldwide distribution.

‘Tradition', written, produced and directed by Damian O’Callaghan of OC Productions, depicts District Court Judge Seamus Moynihan, on his last day in court, who finds himself presiding over the most controversial case his court, and his town, has ever seen.

‘Tradition’ was also written by Claire Corrigan and stars Paul Ronan, father of Oscar nominated actress Saoirse Ronan, Pascal Scott, James Daly, Laura Reidy and the late Brendan Grace. Filming was carried out in JM Reidy’s on Main Street, Murphy’s Bar and Cronin’s Restaurant on College Street.

It had its Irish premiere as the gala opening film at the 2018 Kerry Film Festival and its USA premiere at the Chicago Irish Film Festival in February of this year.
Damian O'Callaghan, who has lived in Killarney for the past 21 years working as a jarvey, this week told the Killarney Advertiser that everyone involved in the production is thrilled with the accolade.

“We were delighted with the Best Film Award at the Wexford Film Festival,” Damian said.
“It is a testament to all the hard work that everyone has done on this project. We also recently signed a contract with Aer Lingus to screen it as their inflight entertainment programme and signed with a US distribution company for worldwide distribution. This is very positive for everyone as it really show cases Killarney's amazing scenery and hopefully attract outside film-makers to come here.”

Dr Crokes team of 2000: The reunion

Published

Recently, the Dr Crokes team of 2000, who won the Kerry senior football championship of that same year, re-united and looked back on fond memories of their glory days and that very special year when they beat An Ghaeltact in the final at Austin Stack Park.

On November 26, 2000, Dr Crokes faced An Ghaeltacht and defeated the Dingle-based side.

It was no easy task making the final for the Killarney side, despite having talent such as captain Roland Neher, Eoin Brosnan, and a 17-year-old Colm Cooper at the start of his illustrious career.

Before the final, Crokes defeated Killarney Legion (preliminary round), South Kerry (round-one), Rathmore (quarter-final), and narrowly defeated West Kerry by a point in the semi-final (1-08 – 1-07).

It was the first time An Ghaeltacht had qualified for the final, but this was no happy welcome for the Dingle side, as the Killarney-based side won their ninth title.

Like in the semi-final, Dr Crokes won by a point as they scarcely won by 1-04 – 0-06.

Despite Dara Ó Cinnéide ending the tournament as top-scorer with 3-20, he was unable to carry his Dingle side to victory with the Killarney side being superior.

Neher led his team out onto the pitch, and he inspiringly helped push his team to victory.

This ensured Harry O’Neill’s versatile and developed squad deserved every bit of praise for them.
