July Dates for Killarney Races confirmed
By Sean Moriarty
Horse Racing Ireland has released an updated programme of events to cover the Killarney meeting in July.
Last week the Killarney Advertiser exclusively revealed the plans that Killarney Racecourse was putting in place to ensure the safety of those allowed attend.
As it stands the meeting will remain as a non-spectator event and will only be open to jockeys, trainers and essential racecourse staff.
Last week, course manager Philip O’Brien said it was the track’s intention to run the week-long July meeting on alternative days and this has now been confirmed by the sports governing body.
The number of race days at Killarney in July has been reduced from five to three which will be stand-alone fixtures on Tuesday July 7, Monday July 13 and Wednesday July 15. The two lost days will be rescheduled later in the year.
“There will be eight-race cards run at every opportunity where stable capacity allows, with the protocols requiring one stable per horse for hygiene reasons,” said Jason Morris, HRI’s Director of Racing.
O’Brien said last week that he hopes that the lost May race days can be rescheduled to October. There is no confirmation of these dates yet and now, in addition, the two July dates will be fighting for places on what could be a very congested calendar.
