Housing set to dominate Municipal District Meeting
Housing is expected to be a key discussion point at Friday’s meeting of the Killarney Municipal District members.
The session is scheduled for today (Friday, June 27), 2025, at 10:00am and will take place in Killarney Town Hall.
Several councillors have submitted motions highlighting various aspects of the housing challenge in the district.
Councillor Marie Moloney plans to inquire about the number of applicants on file within the Killarney Municipal District who require a house specifically adapted for severe disabilities.
Cllr Moloney will also seek a listing of all land banks owned by Kerry County Council in the district and an outline of how many of these are suitable for housing construction.
Councillor Brendan Cronin intends to propose that the Housing Department make affordable sites available from Council lands.
This motion comes in response to what Cronin describes as Kerry County Council's failure to provide or build any affordable houses in the Killarney Municipal District, aiming to assist individuals approved for mortgages who are struggling to purchase homes due to being consistently outbid.
Councillor Maura Healy-Rae will also raise two motions concerning housing.
She plans to ask Kerry County Council to detail all lands and property it owns within the Killarney Municipal District and identify locations suitable for all types of housing development.
Furthermore, Healy-Rae will seek specifics on vacant properties in the district, along with information on what measures are required to bring these properties back into use.

Celebrations are underway in Killarney after Centra at The Reeks Gateway on Tralee Road sold a EuroMillions ticket worth €1,005,000 in the Friday, August 21 draw.
The lucky winner secured the life-changing sum through the special Ireland Only Raffle event after purchasing a Quick Pick ticket on the day of the draw.
Store owner John Bowler, who has operated the shop for over 20 years, expressed his delight after receiving the news from the National Lottery.
“There’s a great buzz around the store and we’re absolutely delighted,” Bowler said. “We have a mix of local customers and visitors coming through our doors every day, so the winner could be anyone. While we’ve sold fantastic prizes over the years, this is by far the biggest. It’s wonderful news for Killarney.”
National Lottery spokesperson Emma Monaghan urged anyone who bought a ticket at the store on Friday to check their numbers carefully. The ticket holder is advised to sign the back of the ticket, keep it safe, and contact the National Lottery prize claims team to arrange collection.
