Hospital extends helpline opening hours amidst concerns
T
THE helpline for patients of University Hospital Kerry has extended its opening hours until 10pm for the next three nights as the hospital is conducting a review of over 46,000 scans or files, involving over 26,700 patients.
The number is 1800-742-900 and the period in question is from March 2016 to July 2017, and covers patients from Kerry, North Cork and South Limerick.
Concerns were raised today by patient advocates about how a doctor at the hospital missed three cases of cancer in July and August.
Meanwhile Kerry Sinn Féin councillor Toiréasa Ferris has said that a fourth case of serious delayed misdiagnosis, at University Hospital Kerry, has been reported to her.
Cllr Ferris said: "This morning I spoke to the family of a constituent from Kerry who had a scan in early summer and as a result of an erroneous report on that scan received a delayed diagnosis for a serious cancer. Devastatingly for the family the delay has seriously impacted on the treatment that is now available for their loved one. The family further tell me that they were informed that this is the fourth serious case that has been discovered. The HSE need to clarify their figures and explain why this case was not included yesterday. Families need explanations and clarification without further delay.”
Issues had been raised by consultants and GPs about the work of a former radiologist at University Hospital Kerry.
