Historic Killarney hotel re-opens as the Great Southern
A
After a winter of extensive refurbishments, one of Ireland’s oldest and best-loved hotels has re-opened today under its original name, the Great Southern Killarney.
More recently known as The Malton, the decision to revert to the old badge will no doubt be welcomed by many Killarney natives for whom the famous Great Southern was always an important local landmark.
Owned by the Scally family since 2014, the historic grand-dame-style hotel is part of the Hayfield Family Collection that includes the Killarney Royal in Killarney and Hayfield Manor in Cork City.
Over the past two years, the family-run company has invested in a major restoration programme.
Celebrating the next chapter of the hotel - which first opened in 1854 - will be three generations of family including Joe and Margaret Scally, their children and grandchildren, along with the team who work in the hotel.
