Gleneagle Concert Band represents Killarney in Spain

The Gleneagle Concert Band recently returned from a highly successful tour of Seville and Gibraltar.

The Killarney-based band, now in its 44th year, performed a joint evening concert with the Midleton Concert Band beneath the spectacular Las Setas structure in the heart of Seville.

Las Setas, a large, predominantly wooden structure, features restaurants, a performance square, an archaeological museum, and a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of Seville’s old town, providing a truly unique setting for the concert.

This marked the band's 8th international tour, following previous visits to Holland, Germany, and Sweden in the 1980s, Austria in 2002, Paris in 2007, Lisbon in 2013, and Monaco & Cannes in 2017.

Tour organiser and Music Development Officer Vincent Condon commented: “The concert at Las Setas, with its spectacular backdrop, was a wonderful spectacle and an amazing experience for the players. There was a huge band on stage under the baton of Robert O'Brien, and the audience response was fantastic, with long applauses, cheering, singing, and clapping. Both bands performed superbly on the night, and the tour offered an unforgettable cultural, musical, and social experience for everyone who travelled. It was a stunning success, and we are already making plans for our next concert tour to Italy.”

Highlights of the five-day tour included visits to the Royal Alcázar of Seville, Plaza de España, a cable car ride to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar, a Guadalquivir River cruise, swimming at Catalan Bay Beach, and a tour of Seville Cathedral, among many others.

Band Manager Ciarán Lynch added: “The tour was outstanding and was enjoyed immensely by both bands. Memories and friendships that will last a lifetime were created, and we were delighted to share such a wonderful few days with the Midleton Concert Band.”

Parents interested in enrolling their child in lessons at the Gleneagle School of Music or in joining the Gleneagle Concert Band should contact Vincent Condon at 087 2229513. Past members and adults with prior musical experience are also welcome.

Killarney is in the grip of ‘Oscar fever’ this week as the town rallies behind local star Jessie Buckley ahead of the 98th Academy Awards on March 15.

The Killarney native is considered the runaway frontrunner to take home the prize for Best Actress for her performance as Agnes Shakespeare in the film Hamnet.
The town’s pride was officially voiced at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.
Mayor Martin Grady led the tributes, praising Buckley’s extraordinary run this awards season. He highlighted her recent string of victories, which includes the BAFTA for Best Leading Actres, making her the first Irish woman to ever win the category and her IFTA win for the same role in Dublin last month. Mayor Grady also noted her historic win at the Actor Awards (formerly the SAG Awards) in Los Angeles last Sunday, where she again took top honours for her portrayal of Agnes.
“Hopefully she will bring home the big one,” he said.
Cllr Brendan Cronin and Cllr John O’Donoghue echoed the Mayor’s support.

Killarney rail journeys hit all-time high

Rail travel on the Tralee to Cork/Dublin line, which serves Killarney station, reached a record-breaking high in 2025.

New figures from Iarnród Éireann show that demand on the route surged to 962,000 journeys last year, an 8.3% increase over the previous 12 months.
This total surpassed the 2024 record of 888,000 journeys for the Kerry service. Nationally, the rail network also saw its busiest year ever, recording 55 million total journeys across Intercity, Commuter, and DART services.
Iarnród Éireann Chief Executive Mary Considine welcomed the figures, stating they demonstrate a clear appetite for high-quality public transport. She noted that as volumes continue to grow in 2026, the company is focused on expanding services and investing in new trains and station upgrades.
The record numbers come as the rail provider looks toward a more sustainable future, with plans to use the rail network as the backbone for transport and housing development under the All-Island Strategic Rail Review.
