Gaza humanitarian lecture a sell-out
Oxford-based consultant surgeon Professor Nick Maynard delivered a lecture on his first-hand experience in Gazza to a capacity audience at the Brehon Hotel last week.
Professor Maynard described in detail the horrific healthcare situation in Gaza, how he has treated patients with horrendous injuries without anaesthesia, how malnutrition is endemic in the population and how patients are dying in agony due to morphine shortages.
Basic sanitary and surgical equipment is either non-existent or in scarce supply.
Medical evacuations are also not being carried out frequently enough and the few partially functioning hospitals are overwhelmed daily with severely wounded patients.
“The evening was a great success, and actually ended up selling out,” said Susan Larkin Kerry Healthcare Workers, the group that organised the event.
“Professor Maynard has been receiving national attention in recent days with articles on his experiences.”
