THEY tackled the concept of time travel with aplomb last Friday as members of Killarney Rugby Club revisited the 1980s and the 1990s.

The dress code included everything from legwarmers to shell suits as players, coaches and friends of the club converged on the Killarney Grand Hotel keen to evoke the decades that turned the spotlight on artists from The Bangles and Madonna to Nirvana. “The fancy dress night was hugely successful,” said Liam Murphy of Killarney Rugby Club.

“It was fantastic to see so many people come along to support the club. Players, parents, coaches and friends of the club came along and some dressed up for the occasion. We had the Blues Brothers, Indiana Jones, Madonna and shell suits, glitter and anklewarmers were the order of the day as nostalgia reigned supreme.”

Liam added: “The 80s music was declared the winner on the night and a fantastic night was had by all. A huge thank you to Helen Sheehan and the staff at the Killarney Grand for their hospitality and huge support.”

The Killarney Local Injury Clinic is expected to be open by Q3 2026, according to the HSE. The proposed unit will be located on the grounds of St Columbanus Home.

The timeline was confirmed in response to a Parliamentary Question from Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill, who said the project will follow the relocation of the Community Nursing Unit from its current site to the grounds of the old St Finan’s Hospital. Once the transfer is complete, construction of the injury clinic can proceed.
Deputy Cahill described the two new health facilities as “a fantastic addition for Killarney and the wider East, Mid, and South Kerry regions” and noted they will help reduce waiting times at University Hospital Kerry A&E.
“I will continue to push for enhanced health services for our people,” added the Fianna Fáil Spokesperson for Older People.
The new clinic is expected to provide urgent care services for local residents, easing pressure on hospital emergency departments and improving access to timely treatment in the Killarney area.
