Funding boost for Kenny as he targets Paris 2024

Olympic walker David Kenny will receive financial support from the Olympic Federation of Ireland to help qualify for the Summer Olympics in Paris next year.

Kenny exceeded all expectations in the delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021 by finishing 29th overall.

The Farranfore Maine Valley man's preparations for Paris are going very well and only last month he set a new Irish record (18 minutes 42 seconds) for the 5km race walk.

The Olympic Federation of Ireland has selected 33 athletes from 16 different sports who will benefit from funding announced this week.

The fund will support athletes in training camps and with specialist coaching for both Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina 2026.

“I know first-hand the huge personal commitment it takes from an athlete to succeed, both emotionally and financially. The strength and depth of applications that were received demonstrated how supporting tangible projects can make a huge difference in the athletes’ lives, and ultimately their performance,” Team Ireland Chef de Mission for Paris 2024 and 2012 Olympian, Gavin Noble, said.

“We are very happy to support a range of initiatives, from additional specialist coaching to supporting an individual coach’s travel to events or to fund the addition of a training partner to add depth to a training environment."

Devine and O’Sullivan top seeds for Galway International Rally

Four-time Rally of the Lakes winners Callum Devine and Noel O’Sullivan are the top seeds for next weekend’s 2026 Corrib Oil Galway International Rally.

The Derry driver will compete in a Škoda Fabia Rally2, with Noel O’Sullivan of Muckross continuing as co-driver.


While Devine is the reigning 2025 Tarmac Champion, the pairing are still seeking their first outright win on the Galway event.


The rally was officially launched on Friday last, January 16, at the Connacht Hotel, Galway, which is one of the associate sponsors for the 2026 event.


At the launch, Clerk of the Course Mark Parsons confirmed that over 100 entries have been received to date.


Other Kerry representation on the entry list includes Kevin O’Donoghue who will compete in a BMW M3, Mossie Costello is entered in a Ford Fiesta Rally4, and John Corrigan will contest the event in a Subaru Impreza.
