Judging the glamorous apres-races event at The Brehon on ladies day gave plenty of style ideas, says Killarney Advertiser fashion contributor LAURA MACSWEENY

I HAD a wonderful day at the Killarney Races yesterday and although the weather gods didn’t seem to be in our favour, the sheer amount of style and fashion certainly made up for it. The glamour of the day continued well into the evening as scores of racegoers, in all their fashion and finery, gathered in The Brehon Hotel for its après-races party.

For ladies day, I wore a Grey Goose headpiece by Kerry designer Rebekah Wall. My skirt and belt were by online boutique boutique www.Love-Jewels.com and I accessorised with a choker and heels from Folkster Dublin and a clutch from TK Maxx Killarney.

I was honoured to be judge for the best dressed this year but I certainly had a tough job ahead of me as everywhere I looked there was one beautifully coordinated outfit after another and the most extraordinary creations of millinery one could imagine, but there were some clear winners that stood out for me.

In the end it was dapper chap Gary Moynihan, in a grey three-piece suit, that walked away with the prize for best-dressed man and a meal for two in the Danu Restaurant.

Moving on to the ladies and it was Anny Dury-Caherman from Ballyheigue who won the prize for best hat and a day for two at the Angsana Spa at The Brehon. Ann wowed the crowd with her stunning work of art by local designer and artist Rebekah Wall and a jumpsuit by Jasmine Boutique in Tralee.

However, it was local girl Annette Roche Clifford, head to toe in pretty pink, that stole the show for me.

Annette wore a dress by online boutique www.vestry.com with a floral headpiece and belt by local milliner and Annette’s mother-in-law Shirley Clifford.

Annette was rewarded for her style with a €500 for Brown Tomas and said she would certainly put it to good use and also buy a present for mum-in-law Shirley.

Alas just as it’s all over for another year I’ve caught some serious racing fever, bring on August for more racing fashion and fun.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has expressed condolences following the death of Dick Henggeler, the well-known owner of The Rose Hotel in Tralee.

Mr Henggeler passed away peacefully at his home in Baltimore, USA surrounded by his Aghadoe-born wife Eibhlin (née Moriarty), their son Franz, and other family members.
Dick and Eibhlin purchased The Rose Hotel in 2015 in tribute to their late daughter Dorothy, who represented Washington DC in the 2011 Rose of Tralee Festival.
The Chamber said Mr Henggeler would be remembered for his warmth, good nature and positive approach, as well as for being a forward-thinking and knowledgeable businessman.
“He knew how to run a good hotel and that was and still is very obvious at The Rose Hotel, which is a great success story,” the Chamber said.
It added that continuity of ownership will remain in place, with Eibhlin, Franz, daughter-in-law Amber, and grandchildren Conrad and Rowan continuing to honour Dick’s legacy and vision for the hotel.
“Dick took enormous personal pride in Tralee and all of Kerry and he was always available to generously support any community initiative or endeavour undertaken in Killarney,” the Chamber said.
“He will be greatly missed by all that knew him but he leaves a wonderful legacy.”

He will repose at O’Shea’s Funeral Home, Killarney, on Friday (October 17), from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. The funeral will arrive at St Mary’s Cathedral on Saturday morning at 10:00am for Requiem Mass at 10:30am, with burial afterwards in Aghadoe Cemetery. The Requiem Mass will be live streamed at https://www.churchservices.tv/killarneycathedral.
