Free heritage events to take place at Ross Castle
Ross Castle will host a series of special outdoor events across two weekends in August to celebrate National Heritage Week, offering visitors an opportunity to explore the history and natural beauty of Ross Island.

On Saturdays, August 15 and August 22, Office of Public Works (OPW) guide Conal Guilfoyle will lead an informative walk exploring the island’s ancient copper mining tradition, which dates back to 2300 B, alongside the native flora and fauna thriving on the peninsula. The walk starts at midday from the yew tree in the castle courtyard. As places are limited, advance booking is required by emailing rosscastle@opw.ie.
On Sundays, August 16 and August 23, OPW guide Noreen Brosnan will host a walking tour focusing on the castle barracks and Ross Cottage. The tour will delve into the stories of those who passed through the site over the centuries, from imprisoned clergy during Cromwellian times to soldiers who later fought at the Battle of Waterloo. The Sunday tours begin at 2pm in the castle courtyard with no pre-booking required.
To mark the opening of Heritage Week on Saturday, August 15, Ross Castle is also offering free admission to the landmark. Entry tickets for the opening day will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at the gate.
Attendees for the outdoor walks are advised to dress appropriately as both events take place on uneven terrain.
