East Kerry GAA Marks 100 Years with historic celebration
The East Kerry GAA Board marked its 100th anniversary on Wednesday evening with a plaque unveiling at the site of its first ever meeting, followed by a commemorative dinner at the Gleneagle Hotel.
The President of the GAA, Jarlath Burns, was welcomed to Killarney by East Kerry Board Chairman Garry O’Halloran at Scott’s Hotel before a short parade, led by a piper, made its way to College Street.
There, a plaque was unveiled outside the LANA Asian Street Food restaurant, the building formerly known as the Central Club, where the East Kerry Board first met in 1925.
The plaque was blessed by Fr Paddy O’Donoghue and Fr Tom Looney before guests travelled to the Gleneagle Hotel for a private function.
The evening included a welcome by Master of Ceremonies Donal Barry, speeches from County Board Chairman Patrick O’Sullivan, Munster Council Treasurer Dermot Lynch, MEP and former GAA President Seán Kelly, East Kerry Chairman Garry O’Halloran, and GAA President Burns.
There were also historical presentations by Matt O’Neill and Ger Galvin, as well as music and dance performances from East Kerry Scór.
The event concluded with a presentation to Uachtarán CLG by O’Halloran, bringing the centenary celebration to a close.

Celebrations are underway in Killarney after Centra at The Reeks Gateway on Tralee Road sold a EuroMillions ticket worth €1,005,000 in the Friday, August 21 draw.
The lucky winner secured the life-changing sum through the special Ireland Only Raffle event after purchasing a Quick Pick ticket on the day of the draw.
Store owner John Bowler, who has operated the shop for over 20 years, expressed his delight after receiving the news from the National Lottery.
“There’s a great buzz around the store and we’re absolutely delighted,” Bowler said. “We have a mix of local customers and visitors coming through our doors every day, so the winner could be anyone. While we’ve sold fantastic prizes over the years, this is by far the biggest. It’s wonderful news for Killarney.”
National Lottery spokesperson Emma Monaghan urged anyone who bought a ticket at the store on Friday to check their numbers carefully. The ticket holder is advised to sign the back of the ticket, keep it safe, and contact the National Lottery prize claims team to arrange collection.
