Council urge the public to remain indoors
Kerry County Council and the Kerry Severe Weather Coordination Team are very strongly reminding members of the public to remain indoors and not to travel due to the extremely dangerous and hazardous conditions caused by Storm Barra.
The Council is advising that wind speeds will increase significantly over the coming hours as the storm reaches its peak.
The Kerry Severe Weather Coordination Team – including Kerry County Council, the HSE, An Garda Síochána, Kerry Fire Service and Kerry Civil Defence – continues to coordinate the response to the storm and reminds everyone that a Status Red weather warning, the highest such warning, remains in place for Kerry.
There are a significant number of roads closed or blocked by fallen trees, fallen electricity poles and flooding. Council crews will only be able to respond to issues when it is safe to do so.
Members of the public should not, under any circumstances approach fallen trees or fallen power lines.
The Council’s emergency contact number is 066 7183588 and it will be operational through this evening and tonight.
Fallen electricity wires/poles and power outages should be reported to ESB Networks on 1800 372 999.
RTÉ News appoints new Cork and Kerry reporter
RTÉ News has announced that Barry Gallagher will take up the role of regional news journalist for Cork, Kerry, and the wider Southern region starting this August.
Gallagher will work alongside RTÉ News’ Southern Editor Paschal Sheehy, reporting across television, radio, online, and social media platforms. He succeeds veteran broadcaster Jennie O’Sullivan, who retired in May following a 25-year reporting career with RTÉ in the region.
Gallagher joined RTÉ in 2023 as a presenter for news2day before moving on to report across flagship programs, including the Six One News, Nine O’Clock News, and Morning Ireland. His coverage has spanned major national stories, including the 2024 Olympic Games, All-Ireland Hurling Finals, and Storm Chandra.

Racing TV’s Frankie Foster made his debut at Killarney Racecourse during the July Festival, broadcasting the event to hundreds of thousands of online viewers.
Operating across Thursday and Friday with his signature orange microphone, the London-based presenter interviewed racegoers and highlighted the course’s scenic backdrop across social media platforms.
In recognition of his promotion of the festival, Killarney Racecourse official Brendan Fuller presented Foster with an official Kerry GAA jersey signed by goalkeeper Shane Murphy, declaring him an honorary Kerryman.
