Cllr Niall Kelleher was yesterday (Thursday) both selected and elected as the new president of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce.
He will take over the Chain of Office on January 1 following yesterday afternoon’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Chamber, the first time that the Chamber’s meeting took place online.
Cllr Kelleher, who served as vice president, will take over from Paul Sherry and will hold office for two years.
“I have big shoes to fill,” he told the meeting.
Mr Kelleher was proposed by Bernadette Randles and seconded by Laura Tangney and was elected unopposed.
Mr Sherry thanked the Chamber and the wider business community for the support he received during his two-year stint at the helm.
He said he was particularly proud that Fáilte Ireland named Killarney as one of the top two (along with Galway) staycation destinations during this year’s difficult season.
He also highlighted the Killarney Staycation campaign 'Welcome to Space 2020’, the online campaign promoting the town as a tourist destination which resulted in over five million page web impressions.
The Wild Atlantic Way Gateway project, which is set to be formally announced next week, was another project the outgoing president played a key role in.
“It was a pleasure to represent the town and businesses of Killarney,” he told the meeting. “It has been an amazing time.”
