Calls for a Civic Reception to honour fire heroes

A Killarney councillor has called for a Civic Reception to be given to the firefighters and volunteers who helped extinguish last week’s forest fires in Killarney National Park.
Cllr Marie Moloney said she visited the National Park during the fires and witnessed first-hand the work the emergency services and volunteers did to quench the blazes.
“I visited the area and saw how hard they were working, they had not slept in days,” she said.
A Civic Reception is the highest public honour Kerry County Council can confer on an individual or group who have excelled in their field or who have brought great success or enjoyment to the county.
There are certain protocols to follow before a Civic Reception can be organised. Cllr Moloney has initiated these procedures and awaits the green light on the proposal.
All such proposals are considered by the Council’s Corporate Policy Group (representative group of councillors) and scheduled when possible.
If the proposal is passed, the Civic Reception could take the form of an event in County Buildings in Tralee or could be done on a local and municipal level in Killarney. Civic Receptions would also be the subject of any COVID-19 restrictions that may be in place at the time.
