Call for international PSO for Kerry Airport

KERRY Fianna Fáil TD John Brassil has called on Minister for Transport, Shane Ross, to explore the possibility of seeking EU Commission approval to establish an international Public Service Obligation (PSO) to make Kerry Airport more attractive to airlines.

Deputy Brassil made the call after it was reported that the EU Commission has relaxed its State aid rules with regard to state investment in regional airports to fund infrastructure developments.

“The relaxation regarding capital investment rules is welcome, and is something that Kerry Airport should consider as part of its future development plans.

“However, I feel that this is an opportunity for a wider discussion to be had on how government’s support regional airports.

"At present, Kerry Airport, and airlines using the airport, can avail of a domestic PSO. However, it’s limited to internal flights in Ireland.

“I feel that it would make good policy, and sense, to extend this to international flights to make the airport at Farranfore more attractive to airlines.

“I am calling on the Minister to start negotiations with the EU Commission, and to seek support from his colleagues at EU Ministerial Council level, for permission for the Irish Government to establish and fund an international PSO.

"Currently many airlines will not consider adding international flights and services to Kerry Airport due to the uncertainty over demand. An international PSO would reduce those concerns by providing a steady stream of income to fund the route.

“Kerry’s amazing tourism offering is being limited by a lack of international flights into the region. The potential benefits of an international PSO are immense, and this is something Minister Ross should investigate at the earliest possible opportunity,” said Deputy Brassil.

The energetic Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has Christmas all wrapped up this year – and those that enjoy the great outdoors have been advised to follow suit.

The festival committee has organised a series of festive season walks which are designed specifically for locals and visitors to experience much of what Killarney has to offer during the most magical time of the year.

The walks will take place every day from December 27 right through to January 1 and the low-level routes will ensure they are suitable for all, particularly families enjoying the holiday season in the Christmas capital of Ireland.

Routes, which won’t be difficult and will take in areas within the national park and other places of interest, are currently being finalised and bookings will need to be made in advance on www.christmasinkillarney.com.

There will be a charge of €20 and all profits made will be donated to charity.

Heartbeat to host self-care workshop ahead of festive season

Heartbeat Killarney will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, November 25, at 8pm in the Parish Centre on Park Road.

The guest speaker for the evening is Michelle Foley, HSE Health Promotion Officer, who will deliver a one-hour workshop on the benefits of self-care and practical ways to include it in daily routines.

The group says the session is timely as the festive period often brings increased risks to heart health due to overeating, excess alcohol, smoking, vaping, higher stress levels and reduced sleep.

A question-and-answer segment will follow the workshop, with tea, coffee and an opportunity to chat afterwards.
