Ben secures silver at science olympiad
By Sean Moriarty
A Fifth Year St Brendan’s College student is celebrating winning silver in a European-wide science competition in the Czech Republic.
Benjamin Gaughran, was the physics specialist in a three-person Irish team that represented Ireland at the European Olympiad of Experimental Science (EOES) last week.
His teammates were Cork’s Manahil Sabir (biology) and Dublin’s Dominika Ryzwanowicz (chemistry).
The three were selected following an intense search to find Ireland’s brightest young scientists.
Ben and his teammates competed individually against 260 other Irish Under 17 students and had to get through three rounds of the national competition before being chosen for the Irish team.
“I enjoyed the experience, I was really happy to be doing it,” Ben told the Killarney Advertiser.
“It was great to spend time with like-minded people that could become your work or university colleagues in the future.”
Following his Leaving Certificate next year, Ben has ambitions to study either physics or engineering at Cambridge University.
