The Killarney and South Kerry branch of the Irish Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil Day is set to top the €1 million mark during today’s fundraiser on the streets of Killarney.
Daffodil Day began nationally in 1987 and the first Killarney fundraiser took place the following year.
Two local committee members, Kathrina Breen and Tim Moriarty, are celebrating their 30thconsecutive year as fundraisers for the Killarney and South Kerry branch.
Monies raised by the branch go towards funding night care nurses, freephone services, palliative care rooms and other vital services and equipment.
Volunteers will be on the streets of Killarney from 6am until 9pm today (Friday) selling daffodils.
“I really want to thank the people of Killarney,” Kathrina Breen secretary said. “They generously give their money, we only collect it. We are around €30,000 short of the one million mark after 30 years, and we would love to exceed that target this year.”
Headquarters for the day is the Killarney Credit Union on Beech Road and anyone who wants to donate daffodils for sale can drop them off there.
Anyone who misses the volunteers can contact Kathrina on 087 2612992 to make donations after today’s event.
