IT’S an impressive sum – €60,000 and counting has been generated for local charities thanks to the South Kerry Ploughing Championships.

And this charity community event will turn back the clock and look to the future on the same afternoon as it unfolds on Sunday, September 11.

The third annual South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show has been scheduled for Fleming’s Farm, Grenagh, Fossa, and organisers are planning an action-packed, entertainment-filled family day out to generate funds for deserving local causes.

The event – fast developing into one of the social highlights of the year in Kerry – has already helped to raise in excess of €60,000 for local organisations and this year’s beneficiaries will be the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association, Down Syndrome Kerry, the Irish Pilgrimage Trust and the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus.

It is organised by the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club and there will be several celebrities in attendance on the day, mingling with the thousands of people expected to flock to the venue on the main Killarney to Killorglin road.

The big day will feature over 200 trade stands, traditional and modern method ploughing demonstrations, sheep dog trials, sheep shearing competitions, harvesting demos, machinery showcases and traditional farm practice exhibitions – and that’s only for starters.

There will be two fashion shows on the day with sensational prizes on offer for the most stylish lady and the best dressed man while a stunning array of gifts will await the winner of the always popular bonny baby contest.

Two fun zones with rollercoasters and a hugely popular Maze in the Maize will be on site to keep children – and the young at heart – amused and novelty sideshow events this year will include an all-breed dog show, baking competitions, a model farm show and live bands to create a real party atmosphere.

Several food zones will be on site at this year’s South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show and there will be activities and novelties on the day for people of all ages and interests, including vintage and classic vehicle displays, stationary engines, competitions for fabulous prizes and so much more.

One lucky person could win a wonderful vintage Ford Anglia and five-star weekend breaks will also be up for grabs.

A major traffic management plan will be enforced with 60-acres of land set aside for free parking while the Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show will take place in an adjoining 60 acres of land owned by the Fleming family.

The gates will open at 11am and patrons are advised to arrive early as there will be so much to see and do on the day.

Admission will be €10 for adults and €5 for students over 14 years of age and senior citizens while under-14s will be admitted free of charge.

Invasive water lily threatens Lough Leane

Published

Environmental group Lochanna Beo has raised concerns over large carpets of the invasive Fringed Water Lily proliferating along the shoreline of Ross Bay and Bog Island on Lough Leane.

The plant, known scientifically as Nymphoides peltata, is an invasive aquatic species listed under European Communities regulations.

It thrives in nutrient-rich, eutrophic waters caused by high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers and wastewater discharge.

Identified by its five vibrant yellow fringed petals, the perennial plant roots at the lake bed with long stems reaching the surface.

Late in the season, seeds form floating chains that spread across the water, while boat traffic can also unintentionally disperse seeds to new areas.

The dense mats are currently impacting local boatmen by entangling engine propellers.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has urged watercraft operators to avoid driving through the weed mats and reminds lake users to follow the “Check, Clean, Dry” protocol for all vessels.

Lochanna Beo spokesperson Valerie Harrington warned that the plant threatens to disrupt the lake’s ecosystem and food web, pointing to wider water quality issues.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has highlighted that Lough Leane is failing to meet Water Framework Directive targets, citing excess nutrients from the Killarney wastewater treatment plant as a key factor. Despite the facility being placed on the EPA Priority Areas List, recent parliamentary responses indicate no upgrade work is scheduled before 2030.

The Killarney branch of the Irish Girl Guides is currently seeking new members for its Ladybirds division.

Aimed at girls aged 5 to 7, the Lily Ladybirds provide an all-inclusive environment where young members are encouraged to reach their full potential through a mix of play, discovery, and community involvement.

As part of the Irish Girl Guides (IGG), the mission of the branch is to enable girls and young women to develop into responsible citizens of the world.

The Ladybirds programme specifically focuses on building confidence and teaching essential life skills.

Participants engage in fun activities that help them develop a respect for the outdoors and learn to work effectively as part of a team.

Weekly meetings take place during the school term on Monday nights from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

These sessions are held at the Presentation Monastery School on the New Road, providing a consistent and safe space for the girls to gather and learn.

A dedicated registration and information evening will be held on September 29th at 6:00 pm at the Presentation Monastery School.

Organisers have noted that spaces within the Killarney branch are limited, so any parents or guardians interested in enrolling their children are encouraged to attend this session.

For further details on the enrolment process or the activities planned for the upcoming term, Maura Fitzgerald is available for inquiries at 087 7986958.
