INDEPENDENT KERRY TD Michael Healy-Rae will be like the fabled kid in a candy store when he performs the official launch of Aunty Nellie’s Sweetshop this month.

In a change of pace from the cut and thrust of Dáil Éireann, the Kilgarvan politician will be showing off his sweeter side when he cuts the tape on the popular Killarney shop on Sunday, August 28.

Aunty Nellie’s opened its doors earlier this year creating five new full and part-time jobs, and has proven to be a great addition to shopping in Killarney.

The “Secret Party” on August 28 aims to give a little something back to the local community after a successful first few months.

“This is an invitation to everyone to come along on the day and to join our celebration, it has been a busy few months for us so this is our opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported us,” store manager PJ O’Sullivan said.

PJ and the team are hoping to treat a few new friends on the day also. “If you haven’t had a chance to visit us yet we would love to see you. There will be lots going on for all the family, and plenty of free samples too,” he said.

The official opening takes place with Deputy Michael Healy Rae at 2pm, but the fun family party will go on all day with entertainment from DJ Liam O’Riordan, face painting and balloons for the children, and some great prizes for kids of all ages up for grabs. The team at Aunty Nellie’s also have a lot of great secret surprises lined up on the day to ensure the party is a sweet success including their own Minion ready to have fun with everyone.

In addition to the cutting of the ribbon by Michael Healy Rae Sunday, August 28, will see the launch of Aunty Nellie’s new loyalty card.

The big launch day will allow Aunty Nellie’s to introduce the huge range of treats available in store including the hugely popular Katie’s Handmade Irish Chocolates, which have gone down a storm with locals and visitors alike. Aunty Nellie’s stocks an unbeatable range of sweets, artisan handmade ice cream from Featherbed Farm and American candies including Day’s sodas, Reeses and Hersheys. Aunty Nellie’s has perfect gifts with hampers which are created for you from retro to your favourite treats, cake plates, cone trees and gift vouchers.

Showing its more romantic side Aunty Nellie’s wedding favours and candy carts have already made dozens of Big Days in the Kingdom just a little bit sweeter.

The Secret Aunty Nellie’s party will kick off at the store in 1 Kenmare Place, Killarney, from 1pm; call instore or check out their Facebook page @AuntyNellies for all the up-to-date developments ahead of the big day.

Get your scrap together

Following the success of the first ever Killarney Lions Club scrap metal collection in 2025, the Club will again run the event this year in partnership with KWD Recycling on March 28, at Killarney Racecourse.

Similar to 2025, money raised through recycling the metal will go towards improving facilities for families attending the children’s cancer unit in Cork University Hospital, as part of an overall fundraising drive being coordinated by Lions Clubs all over Munster.

The Club is asking people to bring non-ferrous scrap metals such as aluminium, copper, brass, zinc and stainless steel (no white goods such as fridges/cookers washing machines). Volunteers will be on hand from 9am until 4pm to take donations of scrap and work with KWD Recycling to remove it for processing.

“Although Lions Clubs in Munster have already raised some funds for CUH, more is still needed, so we’re delighted that KWD Recycling is working with us again to support this very worthwhile cause”, said Jason Higgins, President of Killarney Lions Club. “We’re asking anyone who has scrap metal at home, at work or on the farm now or in the next few weeks to please bring it to the Racecourse on the day because everything we collect will make a difference.”

Tadhg Healy, Sales Manager at KWD Recycling added that “We will recycle any high quality scrap metal that we collect – it can be quite valuable and of course it’s better for the environment if it’s recycled instead of being dumped. On top of that, the main thing with this collection is to help families of children with cancer, so hopefully we’ll get a good response from everyone and raise as much money as possible through this event”.
