THE Garda Regional Support Unit from Cork and Limerick as well as a dog unit is now on the scene as Gardaí continue investigations into an armed robbery on a post office in Waterville.

The raid took place at about 11am this morning and a quantity of cash was stolen during the robbery. The three men involved left the area in a car in the direction of Caherciveen/Killarney.

At approximately 11.15am a report was received of an armed robbery having taken place at Waterville Post Office. Gardaí responding to the incident intercepted a 03D-registered navy blue Mazda car.

The vehicle was pursued and ultimately crashed in the Beaufort area of Killarney. Shots were discharged by Gardaí during the course of the incident. No injuries have been reported.

The offending car was abandoned and the suspected offenders took to the fields on foot. Two men in their 30s have been arrested and are detained at Killarney and Tralee Garda stations under Section 30 of The Offences Against the State Act, 1939.

A third suspect is still being sought.

The incident has been referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission, as is normal practice in situations where it appears that conduct of a member of the Garda Síochána may have resulted in death or serious harm. The Garda Ombudsman has confirmed that it will examine the matter to establish the facts in this regard.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them at Killarney Garda Station on 064-6671160.
