Killarney Water Rescue assists in Lough Ennell search: Body found
Volunteers from the Killarney Water Rescue Search and Recovery Team deployed to County Westmeath this week to assist in the multi-agency operation on Lough Ennell following the disappearance of a young fisherman.
The search had commenced on Sunday, September 20 after the man's abandoned fishing boat was discovered on an island within the lake.
The search was stood down on its tenth day, Tuesday, September 29, when a body was recovered from the lake.
Killarney Water Rescue was tasked directly by An Garda Síochána and local rescue coordinators at Lilliput Water Rescue to support the operation.
The local crew deployed with specialist ISSARD (Ireland’s Specialist Search and Rescue Dogs) water search dogs to assist in covering the water.Over 600 volunteers turned out on Saturday alone to assist state agencies and volunteer units, with searchers arriving from across Ireland to support the local effort.Poor underwater visibility presented severe challenges for diving teams working on the lakebed.
The operation involved the Garda Water Unit, Garda Dog Unit, Civil Defence, and multiple volunteer sub-aqua units including Longford, Offaly, Roscommon, Athlone, Mullingar, and Lough Ree.
