Coolick National School welcomed Minister Norma Foley, for the official opening of its new state-of-the-art modular classroom and to review plans for a major upcoming school extension.

The Minister was received by Principal Gearóid O'Sullivan, members of the Board of Management, staff, pupils, parents, local Councillor Marie Moloney, and members of the wider community.

The newly opened modular classroom provides a modern learning environment for pupils, representing a significant investment in the local area.

During the visit, Minister Foley was also presented with the recently approved plans for the school’s major extension project.

The granted planning permission covers a comprehensive programme of works to modernise and expand the existing building.

The upcoming project includes the construction of a two-storey extension to the front of the existing building, which incorporates a new lower ground level to significantly increase floor area and capacity.

Internal reconfiguration works will modernise the school's appearance and improve functionality, which will include dedicated facilities for a Special Class.

Additionally, a new parking area will be constructed to improve safety and accessibility for families, staff, and visitors.

The occasion featured a programme of entertainment by the pupils, including performances by the school's set dancers, music groups, and the school choral group, which recently participated in the Cork Choral Festival. A blessing of the new facility was performed by Fr Joe Begley.

Litter bins to return to New Street

Published

on

Litter bins were previously removed from Lower New Street in Killarney due to ongoing issues with people using public bins to dispose of household waste.

The matter was raised at the Killarney Municipal District meeting by Councillor Martin Grady, who called for additional litter bins to be installed along Lower New Street, specifically along the stretch from Christy Healy’s shop to Presentation Secondary School, citing a lack of disposal facilities in the area.
In response, Kerry County Council confirmed that while bins had been taken away due to inappropriate domestic waste dumping, a litter bin will now be reinstated on a six-month trial basis.
Council officials stated they will closely monitor usage over the trial period to evaluate its effectiveness and ensure it is used properly.

BREAKING: Move finally underway at new Killarney Community Nursing Unit

The HSE has confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that the long-awaited move to the new Killarney Community Nursing Unit is officially underway.

Earlier today, HSE staff began transferring resident belongings and medical equipment into the newly built multimillion-euro facility on Lewis Road. The phased relocation of residents from St Columbanus Home and Killarney District Hospital will take place over the coming days, with the first residents expected to be settled into the new hospital by the end of this week.

This development marks a major step forward for the facility after a long series of false starts, including a recently missed target date of Monday, August 10.

In a statement issued today, the HSE confirmed the commencement of the transfer and outlined the scale of the operation.

“HSE South West is this week beginning the process of moving to Killarney Community Nursing Unit, on a phased basis,” the statement read. “This is a significant logistical operation, involving the move of a significant number of residents with varying levels of needs. There are a number of factors which will affect how long the move will take, however we are working to move all residents safely and in the shortest possible timeframe.”
