Killarney Water Rescue highlights need for lake base after kayaker rescue
Killarney Water Rescue, Search and Recovery Team is highlighting the urgent need for a permanent base on Lough Lein following the rescue of seven kayakers last week.
The team responded to an emergency call after the kayakers were caught in sudden, extreme weather conditions.
The group's leaders sought shelter and called for help, and all seven were successfully brought to shore at Ross Castle.
The operation was challenging due to the dangerous conditions and very low water levels on the lake. The team also received assistance from members of the public during the rescue.
Following the incident, the Killarney Water Rescue team stated that the event again shows the need for a dedicated lakeside base.
Currently, rescue equipment is stored in private homes away from the shore. This arrangement extends response times to emergency calls, which can delay the rescue or recovery of people in distress.
