Sem history will tell a great story
A new book charting the incredible history of St Brendan’s College and the educational, social, sporting and cultural impact it has had, is in the pipeline and is due to be published in late 2026.
The quality, coffee table style publication will delve deeply into the history of one of the most famous second level schools in the country, charting its foundations, progress, successes, achievements, disappointments, characters, significant events and the good times and bad down through the years.
It will trace the story of the Sem from its foundation in 1860 right up to the present day as well as featuring insightful interviews with past pupils and teachers who have fascinating stories to share.
The book will also include a collection of historic and thought-provoking photographs and it will feature hilarious anecdotes of life in the Sem as remembered by some of those that attended as boarders and day pupils throughout the generations.
A committee has been formed to research, compile, edit and publish the book and to steer the project to fruition and it includes current principal Seán Coffey, retired teacher Mike Leahy, past pupils, journalists John O’Mahony and Donal Hickey and graphic designer Eamonn Mulvihill, as well as photographer Michelle Cooper Galvin who has documented life in the school with her camera for several years.
The book committee has appealed to any members of the public, including past pupils and their families, who have any memories, anecdotes, photographs, documents or press clippings that might be of interest, to send them to semhistory@stbrendanscollege.ie.
Alternatively, images or documents can be sent by post to Sem History Publication, St Brendan’s College, Killarney, County Kerry. All correspondence will be in complete confidence.

Celebrations are underway in Killarney after Centra at The Reeks Gateway on Tralee Road sold a EuroMillions ticket worth €1,005,000 in the Friday, August 21 draw.
The lucky winner secured the life-changing sum through the special Ireland Only Raffle event after purchasing a Quick Pick ticket on the day of the draw.
Store owner John Bowler, who has operated the shop for over 20 years, expressed his delight after receiving the news from the National Lottery.
“There’s a great buzz around the store and we’re absolutely delighted,” Bowler said. “We have a mix of local customers and visitors coming through our doors every day, so the winner could be anyone. While we’ve sold fantastic prizes over the years, this is by far the biggest. It’s wonderful news for Killarney.”
National Lottery spokesperson Emma Monaghan urged anyone who bought a ticket at the store on Friday to check their numbers carefully. The ticket holder is advised to sign the back of the ticket, keep it safe, and contact the National Lottery prize claims team to arrange collection.
