Seán Kelly rules out presidential bid

Published

Fossa resident and Kilcummin native and Fine Gael MEP Seán Kelly has confirmed he will not be seeking the party’s nomination to contest the presidential election later this year. Mr Kelly, a former president of the GAA, made the announcement on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland on Thursday morning.

Mr. Kelly stated that he "reluctantly" decided against running. He explained that he has "responsible jobs in Europe as part of the Fine Gael delegation" and enjoys his current work, which he wishes to continue.
He told Morning Ireland that his mind was "not seriously made up about it" before now, but after looking at the role "deeply," he concluded that as it is "largely a ceremonial role," he prefers to remain involved in active political life.
The Kerry-based MEP also cited the length of the presidential term as a factor in his decision.
He described the seven-year term as "a deterrent" and "crazy really," noting that government, councils, and MEPs are elected for five-year terms. He added that if he were to go forward, one term would be "more than enough."
Mr. Kelly had previously expressed interest in the nomination and discussed his potential candidacy with Fine Gael leader and Tánaiste Simon Harris. His decision leaves the Fine Gael nomination open, with former EU Commissioner Mairead McGuinness now considered the frontrunning candidate.
