Browne’s Agri, Steel & Builders Providers expand into the Southwest.

Browne’s Agri Steel & Builders Providers recently completed the acquisition of O’Shea’s Merchant Business in Deelis Bridge, Cahersiveen.

The O’Shea family originally established the business in the 1950’s to cater for the local farming community and the then thriving turf-fired power station, which was located adjacent to where the business now stands.
Through the years the business developed from a grocery store to one of the leading suppliers of all things Agricultural and Building supplies in South Kerry.
The business thrived under the stewardship of Bernard O’Shea, son of Bat and Peg, until his untimely death in 2013.
After Bernard’s sad passing the business continued under Bat O’Shea, his able assistant John O’Shea, Aine McGill and James Moran.

In April last year negotiations commenced between the O’Shea family and the management team in Browne’s.
Bat and the O’Shea family were hopeful the ownership of the business would stay in Kerry hands and that their team and their customers would continue to get great care and consideration.
Browne’s have been operating the business since September 2 and have commenced with a plan of upgrading the shop, warehouses, and the rebranding of the business.
Browne’s General Manager, Dennis O’Connor said: “I am delighted to have taken over the business, having met with Mr O’Shea and the O’Shea family, it was critical that we assured them that we would be able to look after the team and their customers, which having concluded a number of these acquisitions in the past, it is refreshing to see a business owner put the people who were key to growing their business at the top of their criteria for making the ultimate decision. Browne’s has always had a strong customer base in South Kerry, and we are delighted that the new addition will allow us to strengthen that position and to offer our customer base an even better service in the future.”

Spring welcomed with trad music at Muckross House

A special musical celebration titled ‘St. Brigid and the Arrival of Spring’ took place recently in the great hall of Muckross House.

The event, presented by the Muckross House Research Library on behalf of the Trustees, featured performances by world-famous tin whistle player Mary Bergin, master harper Kathleen Loughnane, and fiddle and bouzouki player Mick Conneely.
The evening included a repertoire of jigs, reels, and slow airs. During the performance, Kathleen Loughnane shared historical insights into the Belfast Harp Festival of 1792, where Edward Bunting recorded ancient tunes to preserve them. She also highlighted the story of a North Kerry man named Lyons who served as the harper to Lord Antrim.
Former Mayor of Killarney, Michael Gleeson, was among the attendees and praised the event for its informative and enjoyable atmosphere. He noted that the music helped dispel the gloom of recent weather and extended his thanks to Patricia and the organizing team.
The performers brought distinguished backgrounds to the Killarney stage. Mary Bergin, originally from Dublin and now living in Connemara, received an Honorary Doctorate from UCD in 2022. Kathleen Loughnane, a native of
