Legion ladies capture county title and earn promotion with superb win

Four goals (three in the second half) propelled the Killarney Legion to a memorable victory over Kilcummin in the final of the Ladies’ Junior B Championship on Sunday.
The girls in green and white put in an excellent display to cap an impressive season with goals by Orianne McGillycuddy, Andrea Murphy, Áine Devlin and Lauren Carey proving crucial in a resounding 4-6 to 1-9 win.
Legion actually trailed at the interval at John Mitchels GAA grounds with Kilcummin taking advantage of the wind to build up a three-point lead, but the Derreen side responded admirably in the second period to power their way to glory.
Along with a shiny trophy, the team have also earned promotion to a higher tier for next season, which is a fitting reward for the great work being done by the players themselves and their mentors Ted Healy, John McCarthy and Orla Culloty.
“The whole club got behind our ladies’ team with banners and bunting around the clubhouse, lots of well wishes and good luck signage around the town,” Ted said. “It really helped drive the girls on in the lead up to the final.”
In other ladies’ football news, Castleisland Desmonds had a superb victory over Southern Gaels in the senior county final. They eventually ran out 3-14 to 1-9 winners with the evergreen Lorraine Scanlon influential as always.
