Kelleher elected for a third term – dedicates win to late grandfather
The current Mayor of Killarney Niall Kelleher has been re-elected to the Killarney Municipal District.
First elected in 2014 he will start his third term as a local representative on June 21 when the new council assembles for the first time.
He secured 1,640 first preference votes but had to wait until the ninth count – at 1 am on Monday morning – to reach the quota of 1,785.
Once Caroline Kenneally was eliminated he hovered up 32 more votes.
Kelleher dedicated his election to his late grandfather Connie who passed away during the pandemic.
“He was the main the main reason I got into politics in the first place,” Kelleher told the Killarney Advertiser.
“I am feeling very emotional right now as this was my first election without him.”
