Garda Paudie Twohig to be remembered at annual Garda blitz

The Girls Player of the Tournament in the annual Killarney Garda National Schools 7-a-side Football Blitz will receive the Garda Paudie Twohig Memorial Trophy.

The annual blitz takes place on Monday (June 10) in Fitzgerald Stadium.

Now it its 20th. a  total of 22 schools will battle it out on the pitch. 

New for this year is the Garda Paudie Twohig Memorial Trophy.

Garda Twohig was a hugely popular member of An Garda Síochána and was a much-loved member of the local community. He passed way in 2021 after along battle with four melanoma.

One of the organisers, Garda Eddie Walsh from Killarney Garda Station, said: "Every school looks forward to playing in Fitzgerald Stadium. We are very grateful to Der Brosnan and all his staff at the stadium. Thanks to Pat O’Sullivan chairman of Kerry County Board for his support.”
The blitz was launched at Killarney Garda Station on Thursday this week.

The launch was attended by current and former Kerry footballers like David Clifford, Tom Spillane, Aidan O’Mahony and Liam Brosnan.

Sponsors include Tom Spillane Auctioneers, Irish Drain Services, Kelly’s Londis (Rathmore and Milltown) O’Keefe’s Oils.

Glenflesk Dancers secure East Kerry Scór na bPáistí title

The Glenflesk figure dancing team of Clodagh McSwiney, Rebecca O’Donoghue, Rachel O’Donoghue, Emily McMahon, Seoidín Dunne, and Paddy MacGillicuddy, pictured following their victory in the East Kerry Final of Scór na bPáistí in Fossa. Mentored by Maria McMahon and Lisa Hegarty, the group will now represent the district in the county final in Ballybunion on March 22nd.

Spring welcomed with trad music at Muckross House


A special musical celebration titled ‘St. Brigid and the Arrival of Spring’ took place recently in the great hall of Muckross House.


The event, presented by the Muckross House Research Library on behalf of the Trustees, featured performances by world-famous tin whistle player Mary Bergin, master harper Kathleen Loughnane, and fiddle and bouzouki player Mick Conneely.
The evening included a repertoire of jigs, reels, and slow airs. During the performance, Kathleen Loughnane shared historical insights into the Belfast Harp Festival of 1792, where Edward Bunting recorded ancient tunes to preserve them. She also highlighted the story of a North Kerry man named Lyons who served as the harper to Lord Antrim.
Former Mayor of Killarney, Michael Gleeson, was among the attendees and praised the event for its informative and enjoyable atmosphere. He noted that the music helped dispel the gloom of recent weather and extended his thanks to Patricia and the organizing team.
