Swapping football boots for golf clubs is the latest move for 'Gooch' as he plans to host a golf classic for a well deserved charity.

The team at Kerry Cancer Support Group (KCSG) were delighted to have charity ambassador Colm Cooper on board to launch their latest event on Tuesday in Killarney Golf and Fishing Club.

The event, which takes place on March 31, is being sponsored by the Mater Private Network and funds raised will finance the work being done by KCSG in Kerry, West Cork and West Limerick for the provision of their Healthlink transport services which brings patients to cancer related appointments free of charge in the region.

Some of the funds will also be ringfenced for the new wheelchair accessible vehicle which has been ordered for the Cork route.

The funds will ensure that the group continues to uphold its mission and vision “that no one should face their cancer journey alone”. Since setting up the transport service in 2010, the group have transported over 74% of those diagnosed in the region and have become affectionately known as a travelling support group.

KCSG have not set a fundraising goal for the classic as it's their first time doing the event. They hope that people will register to play or sponsor a tee box www.kerrycancersupport.com/classic.

A team of four costs €600 and tee box sponsorship is €100. Goodie bags will be provided and a meal will be served afterwards.

“We are looking forward to a great day’s golf and of course meeting everyone in Killarney," Breda Dyland, Service Manager with KCSG, said.

"We hope that the golf classic will raise much needed funds for the service and help us to continue to provide the vital transport links to treatment centres in the region.”

Colm added that he's "really excited to host the first ever Kerry Cancer Support Group Golf Classic in his home course".

"The charity has supported many families and individuals from Kerry, Cork and Limerick since it was founded and this golf classic gives us all an opportunity to raise much needed funds for the service and continue to build on the excellent work done to date," he said.

"I’m certain it will be a super day of golf - with many fantastic prizes to be won on the day! I look forward to seeing you all."

The move makes the club one of the very first GAA organisations in County Kerry to provide dedicated, on-site charging infrastructure for drivers.

The dual-socket units will be situated directly within the club’s main car park, offering charging accessibility to members, visiting supporters, and patrons.

The new ePower facilities are designed to support local EV drivers and visitors traveling to the club’s various sporting events throughout the season.

Ukrainian Olympian joins parkrun for annual Chestnut Run

It is not every day an Olympian joins the Killarney parkrun, but participants had exactly that experience last Saturday, when two-time Ukrainian Olympic skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych joined the event at Killarney House and Gardens.

Heraskevych completed the 5km route alongside members of both the local and Ukrainian communities as part of the annual Ukrainian Chestnut Run. The charity tradition originated in Kyiv 33 years ago and has been organised locally by the Killarney Ukrainian community for the past four years.
The athlete previously captured global attention at the 2026 Winter Games in Milan-Cortina with his “Helmet of Memory” tribute to fallen athletes.
His appearance in Killarney was part of a week-long tour of athletic and educational centres across south-west Ireland. He spent Friday night in Tralee ahead of the Saturday morning run. During his stay in the region, Heraskevych visited the MTU Tralee campus to meet with students, researchers, and local representatives to discuss sports diplomacy, sustainability, and inclusive sports.
