One of the biggest movies of the moment hit screens across the globe this week - and a little bit of Killarney features in a main scene which has been seen my millions!

The Greywind T-shirt that was worn in a scene in the movie.

Warner Bros 'Magic Mike's Last Dance', starring Hollywood's Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek, was released on Friday last - but if you look closely you'll see a character wearing a T-shirt from Killarney alt-rock duo Greywind.

How the bother/sister duo from Ballydribbeen managed to get their merch on one of Hollywood's biggest movies is a whole other story according to guitarist and songwriter Paul O'Sullivan.

Actor Ethan Lawrence, who many will know as Joe in 'Bad Education' or James in the Netflix series 'After Life' starring Ricky Gervais, auditioned for 'Magic Mike's Last Dance' wearing his own Greywind T-shirt.

And the casting people loved it so much that they asked if it could be used in the actual movie, Paul who is in the band with his sister Steph, told the Killarney Advertiser.

Greywind were also the headline act in London yesterday evening (Thursday) in the O2 Academy in Islington but he said they managed to squeeze in a bit of downtime to see the movie.

"It's so cool seeing it in cinemas," Paul said. "You can see the T-shirt in a couple of shots in a two to three minute scene with Channing Tatum. We have been working on songs, recording in the studio this week and took time out to see it. Ethan Lawrence, he's a fan of ours and tweeted us loads of times. Last year he tweeted us and said he wore the T-shirt to his audition. Warner Bros then sent us a contract to use it in the film."

Ethan Lawrence even visited their show in London last night (Thursday) and they were all hoping to meet up.

VIRAL

The band who are busy recording their second album have had their best year online.

They have amassed a following of almost 100k on TikTok. A 10-second clip of their song 'Carspin' got 500k views and 'Afterthoughts' 800k. 'Autumn' got 1.8m views on TikTok and 5.8m on Instagram.

"We went from 3k followers to over 100k followers in three days," Paul added. "Our songs have got over 13 million views recently."

The band's debut album ‘Afterthoughts’ was recorded in Texas with Grammy-Winning producer Jason Perry and charted in the Official UK Rock Chart.

They have been praised by the likes of BBC Radio 1, Zane Lowe and MTV and in 2021 released their acclaimed newest single ‘Am I Asleep?’ with the track being described as “a stadium-ready alt-rock anthem” by Record Of The Day.

"We're pretty excited for the rest of the year. The next aim is to get a song in a major movie."

A Killarney Municipal District councillor has been elected as the first chair of the newly-formed Kerry Local Community Safety Partnership (LCSP).

The inaugural meeting of the LCSP took place last week at the Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre. The new body replaces the former Joint Policing Committees and is being rolled out nationwide.
The partnership is designed to give local residents a stronger voice in identifying and addressing community safety issues. It brings together councillors, Council management, An Garda Síochána, community and resident representatives, business and education representatives, and statutory agencies including the HSE and Túsla.
At the first meeting, Cllr Niall Kelleher was elected chairperson, with Derry Ó Murchú from Dingle elected vice-chair.
Cllr Kelleher said the new structure will allow a more coordinated approach to safety issues across the county.
“The future of community safety in Kerry starts with all of us working as one,” he said. “A shared approach to problem-solving can ensure that potentially harmful situations do not develop. Interventions should be delivered proactively and in a joined-up way with other services.”
Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration Jim O’Callaghan welcomed the establishment of the partnership, calling it an important step in the Government’s new approach to community safety.
The next task for the Kerry LCSP will be to develop its own local community safety plan, supported by the National Office of Community Safety.
