The Rose of Tralee International Festival is coming to town in search of its first ever Killarney Community Rose!

The team at the Festival have unveiled their new plan to host Community Rose selections in towns and villages across Ireland this year with 'Rose of Tralee Communities' - in search of a Community Rose to represent your locality and who will go forward to compete at the county rose selection.

Towns and villages across the country will host their own selection nights to pick a local Rose - and Rose Escort - to go forward to their respective counties' selection events, in this case - the Kerry Rose Selection!

The winner will hold the title of Killarney Community Rose for one year, representing their community and go forward to the County Rose selection later in the year.

Killarney has the honour of hosting the very first Community Rose event in the Kingdom - which will take place on Saturday, January 28 at the Heights Hotel in Killarney.

The person chosen will go forward to the County Selection event and potentially represent their county at the International Festival from the August 19 to 23..

Community Rose entrants must be female or identify as female, available for Rose Selection events and be 18 years of age by January 1, 2023 and not have reached their 30th birthday on or prior to September 1, 2023. Applicants must be born in Ireland, be an Irish citizen or be of Irish origin by virtue of one of your ancestors having been born in Ireland. They must also not have previously represented any Rose Centre at the Festival.

Eligible young men between the ages of 21 and 31 are also asked to get involved with the voted winner going forward as a Rose Escort to the Kerry Rose Selection and guaranteed an interview for Rose Escort Bootcamp.

“We want to put community at the heart of the Rose Festival. Our Festival connects the global Irish diaspora, and this is a fantastic opportunity to extend that reach to include communities across Ireland in that celebration,” Festival CEO, Anthony O'Gara, said.

Those wishing to apply to become a Community Rose or Rose Escort may do so on www.roseoftraleecommunities.com.

A fifth-year student from Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra has been named as one of just 20 teenagers from across Ireland to receive a prestigious Rotary Youth Leadership Development certificate.

Tommy O’Connor, a resident of Rathmore, was presented with the award at Europe House in Dublin following a competition that has been run by Rotary Ireland for over three decades. The programme rewards young people who show clear leadership potential through their community work and extra-curricular activities.
As part of his prize, Tommy took part in an all-expenses-paid trip to Belfast, Dublin, and Strasbourg. The itinerary included a tour of Stormont, visits to the Dáil and Seanad, and a private tour of the European Court of Human Rights. The highlight of the journey was a visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, where the group was welcomed by President Roberta Metsola and participated in “Euroscola,” a simulation of how MEPs debate and vote on EU policy.
Tommy is already a well-known figure in local community circles. He is an active member of Kerry Comhairle na nÓg and the youth branch of the Rathmore Social Action Group, where he assists with local gardening, painting projects, and visiting the Rathmore Day Care Centre. He has also been a central figure in local fundraising efforts for those affected by conflict in Gaza, Ukraine, and Somalia.
A talented performer, Tommy has been a member of the Killarney Musical Society for four years, appearing in local productions of Evita and All Shook Up.
Tommy said the week provided a unique insight into how politics affects daily life. “I have learned so much about the functions of each parliament, but I also learned more about myself as a person,” he said. “The highlight for me was meeting fellow teenagers from all over the island and making what I believe will be lifelong friends.”

Killarney Athletic AFC has been granted planning permission by Kerry County Council to significantly expand its facilities at its Woodlawn site.

The decision, finalised this week, clears the way for the club to construct a brand-new grass soccer pitch. The expansion is designed to meet the growing needs of the club’s various age groups and teams, providing much-needed additional playing space at the busy Woodlawn Road grounds.

The approved planning application includes the provision of essential infrastructure for the new development. Along with the grass surface, the project involves the installation of ball-stop netting and a secure perimeter fencing surround.

To ensure the new facility is fully integrated with the club’s current layout, the plans include the construction of a network of walkways. These paths will link the new development directly to the existing soccer pitches, ensuring safe and easy access for players, coaches, and spectators throughout the site.
