EPA grants asphalt production licence despite local objections
Residents of the Clasheen and Minish areas have expressed their disappointment after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) granted permission for an asphalt manufacturing plant in their area.
The EPA upheld planning permission previously granted by Kerry County Council in May of this year which granted Roadstone a licence to produce asphalt in the old John A Woods quarry near Minish.
Since the plans were first announced, in the autumn of 2020, locals have raised concerns saying that the plant was a pollution risk, especially as it is so close to Killarney National Park.
They were informed by letter on Wednesday that their appeal was unsuccessful and that Roadstone was granted permission to start manufacturing on the site.
“We fought a fight but we lost our appeal,” resident spokesperson David Murphy said.
"We are very disappointed. There's not much more we can do."
Some of the restrictions placed on Roadstone include noise and air quality monitoring.
