Monster Halloween fancy dress parade

Published

on

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the building – maybe it’s time to think again.

After a two-year pandemic enforced absence, during which they hid away in dark and squalid recesses, ghouls and phantoms, beasts and brutes, menacing monsters and cackling witches are reportedly descending, in strange spooky swarms, on Killarney Outlet Centre as the Halloween season rapidly approaches.

The public is advised to be afraid – be very afraid – if they find themselves in the vicinity of Killarney Outlet Centre this Sunday (October 30) as things might go bump – not in the night – but in broad daylight.
The floors of the popular shopping destination have been creaking during the otherwise still witching hours as the spooks make their own plans for their favourite time of the year.

Defiant as ever, however, the children of Killarney will not fear a zombie takeover as they make plans of their own to celebrate with a Halloween party to remember with fantastic prizes and free fun activities for the whole family, from 2pm to 6pm.
FANCY DRESS PARADE
The colourful and maybe just a little bit scary Halloween fancy dress parade will take place upstairs in the centre and the lucky winners will receive some super prizes, including a Razor Sport Scooter, Nerf Magstrike and Owl Squishi for the Best Dressed Boy and a Razor Sport Scooter, Crazart Shimmer n’ Sparkle Tie Dye Studio and Pussycat Squishi for the Best Dressed Girl, both sponsored by World of Wonder.

The Best Dressed Family, in association with the Christmas in Killarney festival, will receive a family pass for two adults and two children (under 12) to visit Santa at ANAM on the East Avenue Road, Killarney and the lucky family will also receive three occasion platters for their next family event from O’Brien’s Irish Sandwich Bar in Killarney Outlet Centre.

The Best Dressed Adult, meanwhile, will collect a €50 voucher for DV8 which is also in the centre.
Registration for the fancy dress parade will open from 3.30pm with an entry fee of just €1 per person and the judges are looking forward to seeing some really fantastic and unusual costumes this year.
Every child who participates in the fancy dress parade will be given a free goody bag.

There will be free bouncy castles with A Time to Party, free Halloween face painting, floor games and balloon modelling while the incredible Tony Wonder will be on hand with his famous magic shows at 2.30pm and 4.30pm.

As an added novelty, Killarney Candle Makers will also be set up to help create personalised candles with a small charge applying.

Paul Sherry, General Manager at Killarney Outlet Centre, said he can’t wait for the mayhem and madness to commence.

“Halloween is a great time for the children to be children and I know families are really looking forward to our fancy dress party and all the free fun activities, to which all are welcome,” he said.

St Brendan’s student Aodhagan O’Sullivan crowned CPR champion

Aodhagan O’Sullivan, a student at St Brendan’s College, Killarney, has been named the 2026 School CPR Challenge Champion.

The prestigious award was presented on Thursday, 26 February, during a large-scale event at the Gleneagle Hotel, where approximately 300 students from post-primary schools across the county gathered to compete for the title of “who can compress the best.”

Now in its fourth year, the event is organised by the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit (KCRU) Community First Responders.

The KCRU is a volunteer-led group that provides vital emergency response services to Killarney, Beaufort, Killorglin, Firies, Rathmore, and Kenmare.

The challenge focused on “Quality CPR” (QCPR), combining a high-stakes competition with practical life-saving training and the chance for students to engage directly with local emergency and community services.

The competition utilised advanced QCPR technology to measure the depth and rate of compressions, ensuring that students aren’t just learning the motions, but are performing life-saving techniques to a clinical standard.

Beyond the competitive element, the day served as an educational hub, highlighting the “chain of survival” and the importance of immediate bystander intervention in the event of a cardiac arrest.

The 2026 challenge was made possible through the support of the Vodafone Foundation, The Gleneagle Hotel, and First Aid Systems Ltd, alongside a variety of local sponsors. Organisers praised the enthusiasm of the 300 participants, noting that such events are essential for building a “heart-safe” community and equipping the next generation with the skills to save a life.

Cllrs demand meeting with HSE property officials

Killarney councillors are seeking an urgent face-to-face meeting with the HSE to prevent the town’s health infrastructure from falling into further decay.

At Wednesday’s Municipal District meeting, Cllr Maura Healy-Rae raised a motion calling for clarity on the HSE’s long-term plans for its significant property holdings within the town.

The focus of the concern is the sprawling St Finan’s Hospital site, which has been lying derelict since the facility closed its doors in 2012.

Despite sitting on prime land, the Victorian structure has remained idle for 14 years with no progress on redevelopment.

While the new Community Nursing Unit has been built on a portion of the St Finan’s grounds, the vast majority of the historic site continues to deteriorate.

The concern among local representatives is that a “domino effect” of dereliction could follow once the new hospital eventually opens.

When residents are transferred to the new unit, both the existing Killarney District Hospital and the St Columbanus Home (the proposed new home for a minor injuries unit) will be vacated.
Cllr Healy-Rae and her colleagues are demanding guarantees that these buildings will not suffer the same fate as St Finan’s.

Without a clear strategy from the HSE, there are fears that Killarney could be left with multiple large-scale derelict sites in prominent locations, rather than seeing these buildings repurposed for housing, community use, or further healthcare needs.
