A local soprano was getting in the festive mood as far back as last March - writing a Christmas song which she is releasing today (Friday).

It's the first song written by Mary Culloty O'Sullivan and she's so excited to finally reveal it to the world on all streaming platforms - after keeping it a secret for nine months!

"I wrote 'Christmas Bells' last March, and it was one of the first songs I wrote!" Mary told the Killarney Advertiser.

"I’m not sure what inspired me to write a few Christmas songs last March but I ended up writing a few until the summer! I chose four out of what I wrote to do an EP which includes 'Christmas Bells', 'Winter', 'Heartbreak at Christmas', and 'Home for Christmas'."

She added that she is delighted and grateful to be one of the recipients of the 2021 Eamonn Kelly Bursary Awards from the Kerry Arts Council, which funded 'Christmas Bells'.

Her songs will be available to download on Spotify, iTunes and all other streaming platforms worldwide.

"A huge thank you to Tony O’Flaherty from Sonas Studios who has recorded and produced the EP, I am thrilled with everything!"

Mary will be doing a livestream on her Facebook Page this coming Sunday at 8pm to launch her EP and will be singing her own songs and well-known traditional carols.

"Please request 'Christmas Bells' from Radio Kerry and all radio stations around the country. It is already getting a great reaction in the UK. It is No.1 in a Christmas Song Radio Poll Bluetorch Radio, so I am delighted with that! I am very excited to see what happens throughout December, and am also looking forward to 2022 as I have songs written and ready to record and release into the world!"

Contactless payments launched on Local Link services

Passengers using TFI Local Link Kerry services in Killarney and across the county can now pay for their journeys using contactless card payments.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) confirmed the rollout this week, allowing commuters to simply tap their debit card, credit card, or mobile devices, such as Apple Pay and Google Pa, when boarding.

The move is designed to offer more convenience for those using high-frequency rural and regional routes.

In Killarney, the new payment option will be available on the TFI Anseo town services, which have seen a significant increase in passenger numbers since their introduction.

The contactless system is currently available for single journey fares, while those using daily or weekly passes can continue to use the Leap website or the TFI Leap Top Up App.
Alan O’Connell, General Manager of TFI Local Link Kerry, welcomed the modernisation of the fleet.

“The introduction of contactless payments is another welcome step forward for public transport in Kerry,” he said. “It complements other major projects in the county, including the expansion of TFI Local Link services and the delivery of TFI Anseo in Killarney, which is proving to be another great initiative.”

While the new technology offers a modern alternative, traditional payment methods are not being phased out. Cash payments, TFI Leap cards, and Free Travel Cards all remains fully valid across the network.
