The Christmas lights in Killarney will come on one day earlier than planned to coincide with the start of the Rentokil-Initial Killarney Historic Rally.

The ceremonial start will take place on Friday, November 26 from 7pm with Main St closed at 6pm.

The official turning on of the Christmas lights is scheduled for the following Saturday night – November 27 – the same day as the rally.

However, Mayor Marie Moloney, confirmed at last week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting that the lights will be turned on Friday night too in time for the ceremonial start and one day of the official switching on.

“The rally is promoting Killarney,” she said.

Speaking at a low key press conference to announce details of this year’s rally, Clerk of the Course Martin Farrell said:

“We are delighted to announce, with huge thanks to Killarney Municipal District and Kerry County Council, that the annual switch on of the town's beautiful Christmas lights has been brought forward 24 hours to coincide with the ceremonial start of the rally. This will ensure that the town is looking its very best on the highlight television show which will be broadcast after the event.”

The annual Killarney Regatta Dance took place on September 25 as rowers, families and supporters came together to celebrate their successful year.

The racing was cancelled in September due to bad weather.

The Killarney Regatta is one of Ireland’s oldest rowing events, having first begun in 1788.

The dance took place at the Killarney Oaks Hotel where there was a lot of excitement and fun. Six rowing clubs, Fossa, Workman’s, St Brendan’s, Commercials, Flesk Valley, and Muckross, came together to celebrate the community and its shared history.

Amelia Counihan was crowned as the Regatta Queen.

The Queen represents the spirit pride and grace of the rowing community and has been a tradition in the club for generations.

Workman’s Rowing Club congratulated Amelia and described her as a woman who embodies everything that their tradition stands for.

The club said: “Queen is more than a title — it is a celebration of history, community, and the spirit of Killarney rowing.”
