It’s Killarney’s only dedicated sports recovery suite and it’s set to launch today (Saturday).

Business owner and Killarney Advertiser Business Development Manager, Chris Davies, has partnered with local businessman Cormac Casey, the Killarney Advertiser and KC Print on this new venture. Chris is delighted to finally get the doors to Reboot Recovery Suite open, and although it was a slow process, he is happy with the end result.

“Work started on the business in April with an opening date of June in mind,” Chris said.

“Here we are seven months later and we are just about ready to open the doors. As anyone who has set up a new business would know, there is always a few unexpected road blocks along the way, but the end product was worth it. It was important to do it right and I wanted to create a space that is both comfortable and welcoming, and I think we have that now.”

Reboot Recovery Suite is fitted out to a high standard and boasts market leading recovery equipment.

“We tried not to cut corners and it was important to source the best recovery equipment. Our cold water immersion CryoSpa is employed by the likes of AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Brooklyn Nets, Manchester United, even US tennis champion Emma Raducanu was pictured using the spa earlier in the year. Other equipment such as our Normatec Compression Boots have been endorsed by NBA stars LeBron James and Kevin Durant.”

RECHARGE

The goal was to create a space for sports and fitness enthusiasts to meet and recharge after high intensity training and competitions.

“For a town of our size, Killarney has a huge sporting community. Between soccer and GAA alone I’d say there are about 10 clubs within a 20km radius of our recovery suite. Add athletics, rugby, cycling, combat sport etc into the mix and you have a lot of people who are interested in maintaining and getting the best out of their body. We also have some of the best gyms in Ireland right on our doorstep and there is no doubt all their members take training and recovery seriously. Reboot Recovery Suite is a place where all these people can come to reduce the risk of injury and help them perform to their maximum potential. Even for people who don’t play sport, our recovery suite is beneficial for those who suffer with muscle and joint soreness, fatigue or those just looking to unwind after a long walk or hike in the park.”

Chris believes that sport, even at amateur level, is taken much more seriously now than it was 10 or 15 years ago, and a service like this is needed in Killarney.

“I remember when I was in school, lads would be snacking on a chocolate square bar and sipping away on a bottle of Coke at 11am in the morning. Now 16 and 17-year-olds are carrying around 2 litre bottles of water and hitting the gym at lunch. Young people are better educated on how to train and recover now so I think there is definitely an appetite for a dedicated recovery suite like ours.”

Reboot are currently running a competition over on their Instagram account @rebootrecoverysuite where they are giving away one full year’s membership to the lucky winner. Head over for more details on how to enter.

Newly released book documents Civil War politics in Kerry

Kerry historian Owen O’Shea has released a new book detailing Civil War politics in the county and charting the turbulent and sometimes violent elections of the 1920s and early 1930s.

From Bullets to Ballots: Politics and Electioneering in Post-Civil War Kerry, 1923-33 has been published this week by UCD Press and will be launched at events in Tralee during the coming weeks.

Owen’s book is based on four years of research for a PhD at the School of History at University College Dublin.

Owen describes the Civil war in Kerry as the most divisive and longer lasting than any other county in Ireland.

He said: “Politics and election campaigns in the county were hugely influenced by the bitterness and hatred which the war created.

Elections brought underlying tensions to the surface and were often occasions of violence fuelled by fiery rhetoric from election platforms.”

In the book, the results of elections for the Civil War parties, as well as other parties who were not defined by the Treaty split, are considered in detail.

Key influences on electoral behaviour are examined, including party organisation, the role of party members, the dynamics of election campaigns, how the memory of the Civil War was used to persuade voters, and the crucial role of newspapers and their coverage of elections.

The book was launched by Professor Ferriter in Dublin bookshop Books Upstairs, on Tuesday.

There will be a Kerry launch on November 28 at O’Mahony’s Bookshop in Tralee with Minister Norma Foley as guest speaker.
