University Hospital Kerry asks public to stay away unless it’s a “genuine emergency”

The Emergency Department (ED) at University Hospital Kerry (UHK) is exceptionally busy and has been coming under continuing pressure with high numbers presenting with a variety of complex needs.

Management at the hospital are asking members of the public to only attend in the case of a genuine emergency, advising that, where possible, a GP or Southdoc out of hours service be consulted in the first instance.

People are asked to consider alternative care and treatment options and keep our ED services for the patients who need them most.

Management at UHK would like to remind the public that the Emergency Department is for emergency services only.

Non-essential referrals should be deferred and the alternatives above considered.

“Patient care and safety is paramount at UHK and the situation is being continually monitored as a priority by Hospital Management who have taken steps to address the issue. Management at UHK wishes to extend apologies for any inconvenience caused and thank the public for their co-operation and support,” said a hospital spokesperson.

Killarney-based musician Shane Doolan will release his latest single, ‘SPACEMAN’, this Friday, December 19.

The new track is described as an atmospheric release exploring themes of ambition, isolation, and the desire to escape everyday limits. The single showcases Doolan’s evolving sound, combining emotional storytelling with cinematic production.
The release follows a significant year for the young artist. Earlier in 2024, Doolan headlined his first live show at The Anam Centre in Killarney. The event was a major local success, raising over €1,055 for Movember, the men’s health charity.
Doolan, who first gained local attention after his band won the Battle of the Bands at the Anam Centre, has cited influences such as Walking on Cars, Bon Iver, and Kodaline. Following his September debut, “The Ruins,” and his second single, “After The Bells,” he is currently working toward a debut EP set for release in January 2026.
‘SPACEMA’ will be available on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and all major streaming platforms from this Friday.
