Local groups to benefit from funding

It is beginning to look like Killarney will have a very Happy Christmas this year thanks to the Community Support Fund for 2021, which was announced this week.

The organising committee behind the Christmas in Killarney Festival was one of the biggest winners, with a total of €54,123.50 set to be distributed to 24 community organisations in the Killarney Municipal District under the scheme.

Kerry County Council announced details this week with a total of 123 groups and projects to receive grant aid worth €475,000 this year across the five Municipal Districts in the county.

Christmas in Killarney is set to receive €10,000 – the biggest allocation of funding in the Killarney Municipal District.

Other big winners include the Barraduff Community Field Organisation which will get €8,273.50 under the scheme.

Both Rathmore Community Council and Killarney Rotary Club will get €4,800 and €3,000 respectively to be put towards Tidy Towns initiatives.

Councillors from the Killarney Municipal District met on Wednesday to approve the allocation of funding to the volunteer groups.

“We must commend all the volunteers for their hard work in enhancing our community,” Mayor Marie Moloney told the online meeting.

Other beneficiaries include the Gleneagle Concert Band which will receive €1,273.50 and Killarney Cardiac Response Unit which is in line for €1,800.

The Glenflesk figure dancing team of Clodagh McSwiney, Rebecca O’Donoghue, Rachel O’Donoghue, Emily McMahon, Seoidín Dunne, and Paddy MacGillicuddy, pictured following their victory in the East Kerry Final of Scór na bPáistí in Fossa. Spring welcomed with trad music at Muckross House


A special musical celebration titled ‘St. Brigid and the Arrival of Spring’ took place recently in the great hall of Muckross House.


The event, presented by the Muckross House Research Library on behalf of the Trustees, featured performances by world-famous tin whistle player Mary Bergin, master harper Kathleen Loughnane, and fiddle and bouzouki player Mick Conneely.
The evening included a repertoire of jigs, reels, and slow airs. During the performance, Kathleen Loughnane shared historical insights into the Belfast Harp Festival of 1792, where Edward Bunting recorded ancient tunes to preserve them. She also highlighted the story of a North Kerry man named Lyons who served as the harper to Lord Antrim.
Former Mayor of Killarney, Michael Gleeson, was among the attendees and praised the event for its informative and enjoyable atmosphere. He noted that the music helped dispel the gloom of recent weather and extended his thanks to Patricia and the organizing team.
