Phased reopening of indoor hospitality agreed by Government

The Government has agreed to a number of measures to allow a phased reopening of indoor hospitality.

Ministers are set to meet later today (Tuesday) with representatives from the hospitality industry to discuss a way forward safely.

Measures signed off by the Cabinet yesterday include allowing members of the public who are fully vaccinated, or who have recovered from COVID-19 in the previous six months, to eat indoors.

The Government’s new Digital COVID Certificates (DCC), which Ireland and other EU countries are implementing, can be used by members of the public as evidence of being fully vaccinated, or other medical documentation, which will be set out in guidelines in the coming days.

Visitors to Ireland outside the EU, including the US, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, a nationally certified equivalent can be used for the purposes of verifying the vaccination or immunity status of such persons, in line with agreed Government policy on international travel; and, children under 18 accompanied by a vaccinated or recovered adult parent or guardian can also be admitted for indoor services.

Pub, restaurant and café operators and hotels will be required to comply with the Government’s Work Safely protocol for the protection of workers and public health, social distancing.

And to ensure a safe and sustained reopening, social distancing measures will remain in place in order to protect workers and children in such premises in line with discussions with unions and the hospitality sector.

The Government also agreed to give further consideration to the use of PCR and rapid antigen testing in further phases of lifting of restrictions.

It's aimed to have the legislation passed by the Dáil this week and into force next week.

Killarney Innovation Centre seeking funding for major expansion

The Killarney Innovation Centre has announced plans for a new building project to meet the growing demand from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the region.

The not-for-profit centre, which has operated for over 25 years, aims to expand its capacity to provide workspace and growth supports for local businesses.

Plans for the expansion have been in development for two years.

However, the centre is currently facing challenges in securing the capital financing needed to begin construction.

Management noted that while the demand for space is clear, existing government supports for such infrastructure are limited and difficult to access.

“This project is about creating the conditions in which businesses can thrive and contribute to the regional economy,” said Mr Counihan, Centre Chairperson. “The demand we are seeing reflects the ambition of local enterprises, and it is essential that infrastructure keeps pace with that growth.”

Over the past two years, the board has engaged with various funding bodies and agencies to secure financial backing.

Mr Counihan expressed frustration at the current funding landscape, stating there is a “disconnect between recognised need and available supports.”

The centre is calling for a renewed focus on capital investment for enterprise hubs, highlighting that such projects deliver long-term returns through job creation and regional competitiveness.

The proposed build would allow the centre to accommodate more businesses and provide enhanced services for evolving industry needs.
