Sports mad teen’s fun in the flood video goes viral

A flooded GAA pitch might not be the ideal training conditions but it proved the perfect formula to make a Killarney teen's video go viral!. 19-year-old Glenflesk GAA footballer Damien Switzer had the ingenious idea on Tuesday to take advantage of the flooded pitch near his home following torrential rain - with the help of his father Damien Snr who waded into the water to film the fun.

And it proved so popular after being posted on the TikTok social media platform that it's chalked up a staggering 650k views, 129k likes, over 4,200 comments and 8,300 shares.

News outlets including Sky News also interviewed the teen after it was posted by the Killarney Advertiser on Tuesday afternoon as well on other platforms which have also amassed thousands of hits. And one of the country's best loved GAA sites www.hoganstand.com also featured it to Damien's delight.

In the video, sports mad Damien can be heard saying "If you want to play football down here in Kerry you better show up for training no matter what the weather is. You've got to be hungry for that ball and make sure you beat your opponent to it every time. There's usually a photographer at the game so you can slick back your hair to look well for the photo so you can post it on Facebook afterwards of course. You're gotta be strong as well so you better work on your strength and conditioning while you are training and of course on match day you put them all together and work your socks off. What a point," he says.

Damien, who is currently studying Sports and PE Pre-teaching in Kerry College hopes to progress on to UCC next year to do PE teaching and Irish. He regularly trains on the pitch outside his home.

"I had the idea while working online at home and on my lunch break I went over with dad and I just dived in," Damien told the Killarney Advertiser.

"Dad was in the water filming, it took us about 10 to 15 minutes."

He then showed his friends for the craic and they suggested he post it online.

"They suggested I make it public and it reached 60k in the first hour and 120k in the second. It's crazy."

Knockaderry Farranfore National School received a new set of football and basketball jerseys and shorts this week, sponsored by the Manor West Hotel in Tralee and produced by MFC Sports.

The presentation was made by Manor West Hotel General Manager Ruth O’Sullivan and Senior Kerry footballer Joe O’Connor, who is Munster Area Development Manager with MFC Sports.
Pupils decorated the school hall in green and gold for the occasion and were excited to meet the visitors. The school thanked Manor West Hotel for its generous support and said the new kit will be well used in upcoming games.
“The children enjoyed the visit and decorated the hall in green and gold in anticipation of the presentation. The BOM and staff wish to thank Ruth and Manor West Hotel for their very generous sponsorship. The kit will certainly be put to good use,” said school principal Áine Daly.

Manor West Hotel said it was pleased to support the school and promote children’s sport and wellbeing. Knockaderry Farranfore NS, founded in 1888, now operates beside Farranfore GAA facilities, which the school uses regularly for training and matches.
“I would like to thank Joe and the MFC team for their incredible assistance in designing the kit. Who knows, we might even have a future Kerry All Ireland winner among us,” said Ruth O’Sullivan, General Manager, Manor West Hotel.
