Over €1,500 has been raised so far by kind-hearted Killarney secondary schools for Lions Christmas Food Appeal - which is now in full swing. Also, the charitable group have revealed that their Street Collection is going ahead and is confirmed for next Friday, December 18.

The students held a 'No Uniform’ and ‘Hoodie' days led by Transition Year students for the Killarney Lions Club annual Christmas Food Appeal. All money raised for the appeal will go towards providing food hampers for families in need in the Killarney area, which they will receive just prior to Christmas.

Killarney Community College held a 'No Uniform Day' and St Brigid's Presentation Secondary School had a Hoodie Day to raise the funds, which will receive a further boost next week when St Brendan's College will also hold its 'No Uniform Day'.

“Between the amazing support from the Transition Year students and teachers, and online donations to our GoFundMe page, we are making great progress,” Killarney Lions Club President, John Fuller, said. “We are very grateful that we can go ahead with our Street Collection, which we will ensure is in keeping with COVID requirements. All in all it means we will be able to support 75 families this Christmas thanks to everyone’s efforts, which is incredible.”

Anyone interested in making a donation can go to GoFundMe: On-LION Christmas Food Appeal. For further information please contact John Fuller on 087 236 3065 or Denis Doolan on 087 967 0635 or email killarneylionsclub@gmail.com.

Killarney National Park will serve as the venue for this year’s Kerry Alzheimer’s Memory Walk on Sunday, September 20.

Participants will gather at the Deenagh Lodge ahead of an 11.00am start to complete a 5km scenic route through the park.

The event takes place on the eve of World Alzheimer’s Day as part of a nationwide series of walks supported by Aviva.

Now in its seventh year, the initiative raises vital funds for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland to support local dementia services, including daycare centres, family carer training, social clubs, dementia cafés, and the national helpline.

Last year, nearly 3,000 walkers across Ireland raised over €240,000 for the cause.

The Kerry walk will be led by local champions Kathriona Sheehan, Niamh Murphy, Lynda Phillips, and Melissa Molyneaux, who are walking in support of all those living with dementia.
“We are proud to lead our annual Alzheimer’s Memory Walk supported by Aviva to help fund local dementia services in Kerry,” they said. “The event is about community and helping spread awareness by walking together to raise vital funds for care, support, and hope for the days ahead. Join us in Killarney on Sunday, 20th September to show your support.”

With over 40 walks scheduled across Ireland, members of the public can walk in memory of a loved one or to show solidarity. Further details and registration are available at memorywalk.ie.
